What is Yoga Therapy?
Yoga therapy, when practiced by or in collaboration with a licensed mental health professional, involves the intentional and evidence-based use of yogic principles to support psychological well-being.
This integrative approach includes mindful movement, breathwork, meditation, and relaxation techniques—each tailored to the individual’s therapeutic goals. Rooted in ancient yogic traditions, yoga therapy is personalized to address specific mental health concerns such as stress, anxiety, or trauma.
By fostering self-awareness and self-regulation, yoga therapy serves as a complementary tool within a broader mental health treatment plan, supporting clients in cultivating resilience and inner balance.
What Yoga Therapy is Not:
Yoga therapy is facilitated by a trauma-informed mental health professional who is also a registered yoga teacher. It is not a generic fitness class or solely a spiritual practice. Instead, it is a therapeutic approach grounded in clinical knowledge and yogic tradition.
Yoga therapy is a consent-based, client-centered process. Therapists never use touch without explicit agreement, and sessions are shaped around the client’s needs, values, and goals. The focus is on supporting mental health, fostering self-awareness, and promoting safe, healthy relationships with oneself and others.
